Watford v Tottenham Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 29, 2018
Vicarage Road - Premier League
Tottenham travel to Watford on Sunday afternoon in a match that will see one of the two sides end their perfect starts to the season. Watford's win over Crystal Palace last weekend saw them continue their streak, although they have yet to face on of last seasons top five.
Watford haven't beaten Tottenham in over 20 years, and last season's fixtures saw no change as a goal in each half from Dele Ali and Harry Kane saw Spurs dispatch of the Hornets with ease.
After making a number of changes for Watford's midweek cup-game against Reading, Javi Gracia will likely return to the same XI that has started all three league games this season. This should see returns for the likes of Will Hughes and Jose Holebas, with Gerard Deulofeu and Adam Masina dropping to the bench.
Maurizio Pochettino didn't have the worry of a tiring cup fixture, and it would come as little surprise is the manager starts the same players that outclassed Manchester United on Monday night. With Son Heung-Min at the Asian Games, Lucas Moura has taken the change to stake a claim for a starting spot, although Erik Lamela appears to have suffered yet another injury set-back.
Watford v Tottenham Preview and Predictions
Few would have expected Watford to be sitting above Premier League champions Manchester City with three games gone, yet three well-deserved wins have seen the Hornets sit tied on nine points with Liverpool, Chelsea and, their opponents on Sunday, Tottenham.
Pochettino's side have enjoyed a similarly positive start to the season, with Monday's 3-0 over Manchester United saving to establish Spurs' title credentials this season. With the visit of Liverpool looming on the horizon, the manager may see his side's trip to Watford as an opportunity to rest some players, although, he may underestimate the Hornets at his risk.
Since the start of the season, Gracia has been fielding his side in an unconventional 4-2-2-2 formation, with a midfield comprised of two defensive-minded players, and two central-attacking-midfielders. This has allowed Roberto Pereyra and Will Hughes to interchange positions, both creating and scoring goals, with the pace and width provided by the full-backs. Jose Cholebas in particular has thrived in this system, with the 34-year-old enjoying his best ever start to the season with a goal and two assists.
Gracia's new formation also sets itself up well to defend, as, by playing four central midfielders, he can pack out the middle of the park, stifling the creativity of the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. It does, however, carry a risk, as with no wingers, the full-backs are at risk of being doubled up on, especially given the attacking tendencies of the likes of Keiran Trippier and Danny Rose.
For Watford to beat Tottenham on Saturday, they will have to take their play up yet another notch, with Tottenham showing their ability to mix it with the very best this season.
Lucas Moura to score anytime at 8/5
The Brazilian winger is Spurs' top scorer at the moment and looks in inspired form.
Tottenham to win and both teams to score at 2/1
Spurs have undoubtedly the stronger squad, but Watford should still pose a threat going forwards.
