West Ham United v Huddersfield Town Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 07, 2017
London Stadium - Premier League
Premier League action finally returns to the London Stadium on Monday evening, as West Ham host high-flying Huddersfield. It’s a first home game of the season for the Hammers, after the athletics World Championships took over their stadium.
Past Meetings
This will be the first league meeting between West Ham and Huddersfield for 45 years. The two teams did meet in the League Cup 20 years ago, with the Hammers taking the tie 3-1 on aggregate after winning the second leg 3-0 at Upton Park.
Team News
The international break turned out to be a nightmare for beleaguered West Ham boss Slaven Bilic. Manuel Lanzini, Edmilson Fernandes and Andre Ayew all picked up injuries, and are expected to miss out. Marko Arnautovic also serves the final game of his three-match ban, but Andy Carroll, Cheikhou Kouyate and Winston Reid could return to the squad.
Visiting manager David Wagner will be without midfielder Jonathan Hogg who has an ankle injury. Defender Martin Cranie also misses out, while Jon Gorenc Stankovic is expected to be out until Christmas with a knee ligament injury.
West Ham v Huddersfield Preview and Predictions
It’s been a disastrous start to the season from West Ham, who’ve lost all three of their opening games. Things couldn’t have been much different for the visitors, with Huddersfield still unbeaten on their return to the top flight.
Rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, West Ham have already conceded 10 goals. Javier Hernandez is the only player to find the back of the net so far, so the return of Carroll could be a major boost as he gives Bilic another dimension in the final third. With the manager under a lot of pressure already, a fourth consecutive defeat’s unthinkable for the hosts.
Huddersfield meanwhile are yet to concede a single goal, and could become the first newly promoted side to keep a clean sheet in their first four opening games. Despite a goalless draw against Southampton last time out, it’d be some achievement if the Terriers can reach double figures in points at this stage of the campaign.
The bookmakers are making West Ham the favourites for this one though, priced at 19/20 in the betting. Huddersfield are available as long as 39/11, while the draw’s 5/2.
