West Ham v Arsenal Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 11, 2017
London Stadium - Premier League
After their shock victory over champions Chelsea at the weekend, West Ham face another tough task as Arsenal visit the London Stadium on Wednesday. David Moyes will be looking to build on his first win as the Hammers boss, while the Gunners need to get back to winning ways in their hunt for the top four.
Last season Arsenal won both meetings between the clubs, trouncing the Hammers 5-1 at the London Stadium last December. The season before the teams played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at Upton Park, after West Ham had beaten the Gunners 2-0 at the Emirates earlier in the campaign.
After putting in his best performance for West Ham by some stretch on Saturday, goal hero Marko Arnautovic can expect to start in this one too. Sam Byrom, James Collins and Cheikhou Kouyate are all close to a return before Christmas to boost Moyes’ options, but none are likely to be fit for this one.
Olivier Giroud drew level with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Premier League’s second highest scoring substitute behind Jermain Defoe against Southampton, but will surely have to settle for a place on the bench once again. Aaron Ramsey will miss out altogether though after hurting his hamstring at the weekend, and could miss the entire Christmas period.
West Ham v Arsenal Preview and Predictions
Saturday’s win was massive for confidence at West Ham, with Moyes now able to point to that performance in future games. They go straight into another encounter against one of the big six, as Arsene Wenger brings his inconsistent Arsenal side to the east of the capital for this London derby.
The victory over Chelsea was a first win for the Hammers under their new boss at the fifth time of asking, but the manner of the performance against Chelsea after running Manchester City so close the weekend before would’ve been hugely encouraging for Irons fans. The task now is to build on that result, and although that’s a tough ask against Arsenal, it’s a game where they can view any points gained as a bonus.
The Gunners will go into the game as favourites, despite their patchy form on the road this season. They’ve already dropped 16 points on the road so far this term, and are now 17 points behind runaway leader Manchester City. With the title gone, perhaps we’ll need to see more of the likes of Jack Wilshere to inject some fight and passion into Arsenal’s performances.
The Gunners are priced at 4/6 for the win on Wednesday, while West Ham are available at 23/5 and the draw at 17/5.
Arsenal to win to nil at 21/20
West Ham have found the net just 14 times in 16 games, making this bet a good way to improve your odds on a win for the visitors.
West Ham to win 1-0 at 17/1
Moyes is likely to set his team up defensively looking to nick the odd goal on the counter or at a set piece, making a narrow win likely if the Hammers can pull off a second 1-0 victory against a big club inside a week.
