West Ham v Manchester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 06, 2019
London Stadium - Premier League
Premier League defending champions Manchester City kick off their title defence with a trip to former boss Manuel Pellegrini's West Ham.
City won home and away against the Hammers last season, with an overall 5-0 aggregate score for The Citizens. They have won their last six league games against West Ham, and are unbeaten in their last nine meetings in Premier League action.
Pellegrini will make a late call on captain Mark Noble, who missed the end of their pre-season campaign with a thigh injury, and he is rated as doubtful. Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is likely to miss out due to a groin problem, with veteran keeper Roberto set to step in for his Hammers debut. Fellow summer signings Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals are also in line to make their first starts for the club.
Fernandinho didn't feature for City in pre-season, and Pep Guardiola is expected to give him additional time to get up to speed following his role in Brazil's Copa America triumph. German international Leroy Sane is likely to be sidelined with a knee injury, whilst Benjamin Mendy is already out, with Aymeric Laporte rated as 50/50.
West Ham Preview and Predictions
The Hammers have been shred in the transfer market this summer, with Haller impressing in the Bundesliga, with 14 league goals for the French U21 international as he prepares for life in the Premier League.
They have actually already played City once this season (almost), with defeat to Guardiola's side in the pre-season Premier League League Asia Trophy, before losing to fellow Premier League side Newcastle in the competition. It has been a mixed pre-season for Pellegrini's side, with three wins from their six games.
City edged out rivals Manchester City in last weekend's Community Shield, with a penalty shootout victory following a 1-1 draw with their arch rivals. The defending double winners have enjoyed a strong pre-season, with four wins from five games, although they did lose the Premier League Asia Trophy final on penalties to Wolves.
Guardiola will be confident that his summer recruitment will be enough to keep the momentum with his side in the push for the league title, with the addition of Spanish international Rodri Hernandez set to add further depth to their midfield options.
On the face of it, this game should be a straightforward win for City as they look to get their season off to a positive start with all three points - and whilst they are expected to win, opening days games can be odd ones to call. With that in mind, a City win, but with both teams to score comes in at 13/8.
Clashes between these two sides have generally been goal-filled, with over 2.5 scored in seven of their last eight league meetings, and an over 2.5 total goals scored bet is available at 8/15 this time around.
Manchester City to win 2-1 at 15/2
City are of course strong favourites to win here, and they remain the bookies favourites to retain their league crown for a third successive season. West Ham will look to contain them in the opening stages, and will be hopeful that their new signings can have an impact - but despite the cobwebs, City should have more than enough to kick off with a win.
Raheem Sterling to score anytime at 15/4
Sterling has been on fire in pre-season, with four goals in five games as he looks to get himself into optimum shape for the season ahead. He also has a good record against West Ham, after scoring against in City's 4-0 away win in 2018-19.
